Learning from Comparing Conflicts and Reconciliation Processes: A Holistic Approach

Basic Concept:
The basic idea is to have a 3-day conference where we will explore what is there to be learned from comparing (a) various ethnic/national/state conflicts situations and (b) from alternative modes of understanding/learning from the conflicts and dealing with the violent past to achieve resolution and reconciliation of the conflict. The third day will be entirely devoted to what we can extract from the conflicts previous two days to find their relevance to Cyprus.

DAY 1: Thursday 18.06.2009
Can we learn anything from comparing conflicts?

1. The conceptual framework: why do we compare conflicts? Are they comparable?
2. Detailed analysis of the case studies [20 minutes each, 10 minutes questions]
Northern Ireland, Palestine/Israel, Kashmir, India, South Africa, Cyprus
3. Can they be compared?

DAY 2: Friday 19.06.2009
Reconciliation: What modes are there for dealing with the violent past and what modes societal learning can be established?
1. Dealing with the past: Truth Commissions, Reconciliation Commission, Lustrations, No commissions
South Africa, Spain, (Former) Yugoslavia, N. Ireland, Cyprus
2. Learning from the violent past: reconciliation, formal and informal education
South Africa, Northern Ireland, Palestine/Israel, India/Kashmir, Cyprus

DAY 3: Saturday 19.06.2009
Can Cyprus learn from others? Moving on, dealing with the past divisions and educating citizens for a reunified country of the future

§ What can we learn about Cyprus by comparing the Cypriot case with other cases?
§ Can we learn and share a reunited future? What sort of system to deal with a divisive past?
§ What is the best ‘model’ for education for Cyprus?

The PRIO Cyprus Centre in collaboration with the University of Nicosia, the Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies, and the Centre for the Study of Migration, Inter-ethnic and Labour Relations has acquired funding by the Directorate of Youth and Sport of the Council of Europe to implement a National Training Course on Human Rights Education. The training course is entitled: ‘Educators’ Training Course in Human Rights Education: Building Inclusive Environments in Cyprus’.
The main aim of this training is to develop the competences of educators in working with human rights education (HRE) in formal and non-formal educational settings as well as to mainstream HRE in Cypriot educational policy. The training course will take place between the 6th and 10th of July 2009 at the premises of the University of Nicosia. Eligible candidates are secondary education teachers, people working or volunteering for youth organisations or youth groups as well as people working in NGOs or other institutions that organise programs for young people. The training is open to candidates from all over Cyprus and it will be conducted in English.
